The startup time of an application is an important factor, which should be taken into account when testing one or when comparing two applications on the same system. In many cases, timing an application's startup precisely is next to impossible, unless you have a specialized utility. This is where AppTimer comes in. It can measure the time it takes to launch an application and how long until it becomes fully operational. Its design is simple and efficient, but it still provides you with a few useful controls.

AppTimer is distributed as a freeware application, for Windows 2000 and all later editions, up to Windows 8. Instead of going through an installation procedure, you only need to extract AppTimer's executable from a ZIP archive and run it. The application does not require any supplementary tools and it doesn't have any significant impact on a computer's performance.

The user interface is compact and it only displays a few buttons, input fields and check boxes. All you have to do is specify the path to an application's executable file, select an output folder for a log and choose how the targeted application's window should be identified and closed. Besides specifying an executable's paths, you can also type in a command line for that executable.

You can set AppTimer to run the targeted application once or multiple times, with a delay of your choice, in milliseconds. If set to run the application multiple times, AppTimer will measure and log the startup time for each instance. Also, you can choose how AppTimer should identify the application's window and how to close it.

When your settings are complete, you only need to click a button, located in the lower region of the interface, to run the selected application. A message will be displayed when AppTimer is done measuring, after which you can open the log file, to see how much time it takes to run the application.

Pros

You can measure the time it takes to run an application, with pin-point accuracy. AppTimer can be set to run an application more than once and time its startup each time.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. With AppTimer's help, you will know precisely how fast an application can be launched, even if it takes a fraction of a second.
